Headaches Treatment Specialists in Queens, NY

While headaches are fairly common and mostly benign, some can be disabling and sometimes reflect a major problem. Precision Pain Medicine’s board-certified physicians and neurologists specialize in treating headaches and migraines using state-of-the-art treatment technology and time-tested holistic techniques. Our headache specialists are here to treat your migraine headache, tension headache, cluster headaches, and any other type of chronic headache caused by medicine, heredity, or other traumas or injuries.

What Are the Two Categories of Headaches?

Different types of headaches can be divided into two categories:

  • Primary headaches. These include migraines, cluster headaches, and tension headaches. No exact cause can be identified since the headache itself is the disease worth treating. Pain is the main symptom, with no other structural illness. The treatment here is quick and lasting pain relief.
  • Secondary headaches are caused by other diseases, the excessive use or withdrawal of certain substances, medications, or pain relievers, or after whiplash or sunstroke. Overall, they make up less than 10 percent of all headache complaints. The pain is only a side effect and disappears when the underlying cause is cured.

Common causes of secondary headaches include:

  • Flu
  • Sinus infections
  • High blood pressure
  • Strained vision
  • Dehydration
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Hypoglycemia

What Are the Most Common Types of Headaches?

The following are the most common headache types that our physicians treat and provide relief for:

  • Migraine Headaches are defined as headaches that are aggravated by movement. Migraine headaches are described as throbbing and pulsating and usually occur unilaterally. Migraines most commonly affect those between the ages of 35 and 45. This type of headache differentiates between migraines with and without aura. “Aura” describes certain symptoms that the person experiences about half an hour to an hour before the migraine begins.
  • Cervicogenic Headaches are secondary headaches that result from disorders of the cervical spine. Cervicogenic headaches are characterized by pain at the back of the head. Your symptoms may radiate to the top of the skull and, on rare occasions, to the forehead or temple. Cervicogenic headache sufferers frequently have a limited range of motion in their neck, and their symptoms worsen with certain neck movements or pressure given to specific areas of their necks.
  • Cluster Headaches are characterized by a very violent, boring, stinging, one-sided pain in the eye area. The symptoms can last from a quarter of an hour to three hours and even several times a day, although attacks typically occur at night. Men are particularly affected by this type of headache, which is accompanied by reddening of the face, tears, and reddening of the eyes, running or nasal congestion, and the urge to move.
  • Tension Headaches are the most common type of headache. Sufferers describe it as dull and oppressive pain usually occurring on both sides in the region of the forehead, temples, crown, or the entire head. Tension-type headaches often occur in combination with migraines.

What Are the Common Triggers of Headaches?

Among the probable influences and biological factors behind headaches are:

  • Dehydration
  • Certain foods
  • Alcohol, especially red wine
  • Certain types of cheese
  • Too much sun, sunstroke, heat stroke
  • Weather change, air, light, and climate influences
  • Muscle tension in the neck and head area
  • Noise
  • Flickering lights
  • Staying at high altitudes
  • Cold or smoky rooms
  • Hormone fluctuations in women like before and during the period and after the menopause
  • Fluctuations in blood sugar levels through skipped meals, etc.
